YouTube users learn the hard way that online privacy doesn't exist

As noted in my last episode of The Web Week in Review, a federal judge has ordered that Google turn over a significant amount of data to Viacom, as part of its $1bn copyright infringement lawsuit over claims of massive copyright infringement on YouTube.

This data details what videos individual users have viewed and includes their IP addresses.

EDF Energy's Rob Merrington on advertising

EDF Energy recently scored a YouTube hit with its ‘recycled film footage’ ads – the first integrated campaign the firm had created.

One of its clips reached the site’s list of Top 20 most clicked on videos in its category, attracting more than 40,000 views. But although it helped generate awareness and feedback, it did not drive many referrals.

Panasonic to develop internet TVs with Google

Panasonic has teamed up with Google to launch internet-ready TVs that allow users to access YouTube videos through their TV sets.

The new range of plasma Viera HDTVs will be launched in the Spring in the States, giving the web giant even greater reach for its YouTube ad offerings.

Google adds copyright tool to YouTube

Google has introduced the beta version of its YouTube Video Identification tool, which aims to help copyright owners identify their content on the video sharing site.

The web giant has been promising to introduce anti-piracy technology for some time now, though this new solution still places the burden on copyright holders to take steps to identify their content.

Google creates video ad network

Google is looking to extend the reach of its online video ads by allowing its Adsense partners to display ad-supported YouTube videos.

The move, another attempt by Google to monetise its $1.76bn purchase of YouTube a year ago, will see it sharing revenue with publishers that add its ‘video units’ to their sites.

MSN Video updates video ad formats

Microsoft is introducing a new version of its online video site, MSN Video.

The big change is the ad model. Microsoft will begin to show ads to users based on time spent on the site, rather than just showing an ad for every clip a user watches.

Google launches in-video ads on YouTube

Google’s grand plan for YouTube is set to take a step forward today with the launch of in-video ads for a small group of the site’s clients.

The move, coming almost a year after Google’s $1.65bn purchase of the video sharing site, will see the web giant going out on a limb in its choice of format in a bid not to annoy the site’s 130m viewers.

'YouTube killer' bags $100m funding

The as yet unnamed joint online video venture from News Corp and NBC, touted as a 'YouTube killer', has received $100m (£49.5m) in funding from Providence Equity Partners.

The VC firm will take a 10% stake in the company, which gives it a valuation of $1bn (£495m) - not bad for a site that's as yet unlaunched and thus unproven.

Google to begin screening YouTube vids

Google is to launch a system in September designed to prevent copyrighted material from appearing on video sharing site YouTube, according to one of its lawyers.  

Philip Beck said Google would have a library of video 'fingerprints' that would be used to screen new material posted on YouTube, rather than waiting for copyright owners to alert the site's management.

New PM boosts Downing Street YouTube traffic

Downing Street's YouTube channel has achieved a "milestone" one million video views since it was launched back in May.

Weekend visits by the new prime minister to a hospital and a children's centre took the site, a brand partnership with the Google-owned video sharing network, passed the seven-figure mark.
