Threshers reverts to viral discount tactic for Xmas

Drinks seller Thresher Group has reverted to last year’s highly successful discount tactic in a bid to boost Xmas sales of wine and champagne.

A similar 40%-off offer – which the company claimed was a costly error twelve months ago, but was actually a highly sneaky viral marketing trick – is now being promoted on its website.

Viral agencies claim 60% growth

This year has seen UK agencies and brands allocating significantly more cash to viral marketing, as well as spending it “more intelligently”, according to a new survey.

The research, by Kontraband, found growth of up to 60% in output in the first seven months of 2007, compared to the same period last year.

Security experts have issued warnings over a bogus chain email claiming to offer hundreds of pounds in M&S vouchers.

Web marketing innovator Hugh MacLeod's latest voucher virus has again become contagious amongst British wine lovers.

Last December, a voucher giving 40% off all Thresher wines for 10 days appeared on the web, driving £15m sales for the off-licence after being reproduced by bloggers and website owners and passed around in emails 800,000 times.

A video purporting to show users how to become a tester for a forthcoming TV service to be launched by Google has split the web over claims it is a hoax.

A clip posted to YouTube by tech tutorial channel Infinite Solutions on Friday told viewers they could access high-quality US network TV shows as part of a private test by repeatedly logging in and out of Gmail.
