PayPal's disappointing shopping search engine

It was announced recently that US shopping search engine TheFind.com will provide its search technology to PayPal Offers, which returns results exclusively from merchants that accept payments through the eBay-owned system.

The US version is a useful (and fairly popular) service, so I've been trying out the UK site to see how it shapes up...

Hitwise's Robin Goad finds that the payment service has taken a marginal lead, though this doesn't necessarily indicate that more people are making payments through Google Checkout.

PayPal targets new sites via virtual payments

PayPal is reportedly set to launch a virtual payment system to extend its reach onto sites that don’t currently run its software.

Called PayPal Secure Card, the browser plug-in can detect when a shopper lands on an etailer’s checkout page and automatically fills in their stored financial details to save them time.

Steve Case launches PayPal competitor

US company Revolution Money has launched MoneyExchange, a free online money transfer service, as a direct competitor to PayPal and Google Checkout.

The service is backed by AOL founder Steve Case and has also received funding from Citi, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley.

Profits up by 50% for eBay

eBay has announced its second quarter results today, with net profits rising by 50%. Revenue for the auction site was up 26%, though the number of new listings fell by 6%.

The company's net income for Q2 rose to $376m (£185m) while eBay said that profits for the whole of 2007 are set to reach $7.45bn (£3.75bn).

Paypal signs up 35m European accounts

eBay’s online payment outfit, Paypal has announced it has registered almost 35m accounts in Europe - a boost in its battle with rival providers.

It’s the first time the group has released specific numbers for Europe, where it says it processed $8.4bn (£4.3bn) in payments last year.

Strong Christmas performance from eBay

Online auction giant eBay enjoyed a good Christmas period, particularly in the UK and Germany, as fourth quarter earnings turned out to be higher than expected.

A rush to buy hard to find games consoles like the Wii and PS3 was one of the reasons given for the success, as total revenue for the last three months of 2006 reached $1.7bn, a 29% rise on the same period a year earlier.
