Commentators have been predicting the explosion of the mobile web for years now, but a couple of factors suggest that this year they may be right.

5.7m people in the UK used a mobile device to access the internet during January 2007, according to new figures. 

The study by comScore and Telephia compared mobile internet usage in the UK with that in the US and found similar levels of mobile web browsing in both countries.  

The Guardian reports that Yahoo is close to a deal with Orange to provide search services to the mobile operator’s subscribers.

The agreement, following a similar deal with 3, would be a boost for the portal in its battle for mobile search users against Google.

T-Mobile has started offering its pre-pay customers web access from their mobiles for a maximum of £1 a day.
