Believe it or not, there once was a time when Google still had to convince large advertisers that online marketing (and more specifically search engine marketing) was a very cost-effective channel to acquire customers.
Initially Google provided discount to advertising agencies to encourage the adoption of its Adwords platform but in 2006, since this model wasn’t really fair towards other advertisers, Google replaced it with the Best Practice Funding (BPF) Programme.
How did a reputable family of brands (whose products I enjoy a little too much) annoy me into hitting the SPAM button?
Best practice was a great safety net for marketers when campaigns cost tens of thousands of pounds to execute due to physical print, production and distribution costs.
If sales plummeted, the marketer in question could point to a text book or previous campaign performance and the directors would settle back down again.
Any decision on a website's navigation is critical to usability, findability, accessibility and SEO. It can be difficult to undo if you select a poor design. So usable navigation is best established early on in a web project.
There are many different examples of main navigation systems, (i.e. the main method for accessing content in different site sections) but the 'three Cs' of convention, consistency and context are important whatever the design.

I had a little dose of worst practice this morning, something worth adding to any email marketer's Things Not To Do Under Any Circumstances Because You Will Have Angry, Disbelieving Customers list.
