AdWords - Preferred Bidding and Budget Optimiser or not?

A few months ago, Google released a couple of new alternatives to the 'maximum cost-per-click' bids on Adwords, called Preferred Bidding and Budget Optimiser.

Preferred Bidding allows you to specify how much you'd like to pay for each click on average, and Adwords will adjust your bids accordingly. Budget Optimiser takes your daily budget and tries to generate as many clicks as possible for your money.

But is this really what you want to be doing? Both of these options are set at campaign level, and neither looks at the conversion rate of individual keywords or Adgroups, or indeed the value of a conversion.

Google trials newspaper ad system

Google is planning another foray into the offline advertising market by extending its AdWords system to print media.

The search giant has invited 100 advertisers to test out the Print Ads service, which will initially broker space in newspapers in the US.

Amazon trials 'Clickriver' PPC ad platform

Amazon's A9 develops Clickriver PPC platform Amazon is testing a new advertising programme, Clickriver, which allows businesses to place sponsored links on Amazon.com next to search results and on product detail pages.

Amazon's Clickriver Ads, which appears to be a version of Adwords, was built by A9.com, a search technologies subsidiary of Amazon.

Google launches new AdWords testing tool

Google AdWords has released a new website optimiser tool for advertisers to test their landing pages, allowing them to choose the best options for their advertising campaigns.

Google announced the new service at the Emetrics Summit in Washington DC yesterday, and it will initially be available for testing to a limited number of advertisers.

Google launches Adwords click fraud tool

Google has responded to calls for greater transparency on click fraud by introducing a new tool for Adwords users that displays "invalid clicks".

Google business product manager Shuman Ghosemajumder explains: "The metrics of 'invalid clicks' and 'invalid clicks rate' will show virtually all the invalid clicks affecting an account."

This should provide advertisers with an overview of how Google is dealing with clicks already identified as possibly fraudulent, aka 'invalid', though for many marketers this might not be enough.
