5 ways to beat the SEO competition in Google

If you are wondering why your competitors are ranking above you in Google on highly trafficed keywords, it is probably because you are missing a key part in the SEO equation.

To start outperforming your peers on the search engines, I suggest following these five steps:

1.    Build credibility with Google

Before attempting to rank on a highly trafficked keyword (i.e “Furniture”) you first need to build your credibility with Google. This means you should be seen as relevant source for “furniture” and gain rankings on related niche keywords. Niche keywords have lower SEO competition, hence are easier to rank on.

2.    Find the niches in Google

For furniture, among the many possibilities, we would suggest going for “Ducal Furniture”. This is because it attracts a good number of searches and only has 16,000 sites competing for this keyword in Google UK, compared to 1.3m for “Furniture”. This will be a lot easier to rank on with the right on-site optimisation techniques (i.e meta tags, keyword themes, article marketing).

To find this competition information, look at the number of results that appear for a keyword in Google. This can be a time consuming process, but something that can be outsourced these days.

3.    Produce unique content

To get a ranking on these niche keywords, or any keyword, you must obey the golden rule: produce unique content. Otherwise Google will penalise your site. I have spoken to a lot of webmasters who have moaned about their Google rankings dropping, until I have pointed out the duplicate content on their site.

There are ways to scan for duplicate content on your pages by cutting and pasting your sentences into Google, or using bespoke software systems to automate this for you.

4.    Get technical

Search engine optimisation is certainly not a dark art - it is a science, and you just need to make sure that technically all ticks are in the right boxes for SEO. Given the SEO detail involved on each page on your site, we suggest upgrading to a Content Management System (CMS) that can easily be managed and allow you to rapidly create content.

Within three months of setting up a website using our CMS solution, a client of ours, thejetskireview.com, attracted 3,000 visitors. A CMS  can be seen as a rigid system by some because of its standard templating system, but it can sit in a directory on your site like ours which allows you flexibility on other parts of your site. We use Dreamweaver for the front pages.

5.    Keyword Links, Keyword Links, keyword Links

It is important that you are seen by others as the expert in the field for a particular subject. To do this use keyword links, which are the most powerful form of links available. Instead of a link like www.webefforts.co.uk, a link on a keyword like search engine marketing company will produce far better results. Getting these from other high ranking sites is very important, and will help you pip your competitors at the post in Google. There are various techniques we use to do this, but these are beyond the scope of this article.

I hope this guide helps you identify any part of SEO equation that maybe missing for you, and hopefully achieve the desired result of ranking your site above the competition’s on Google.

This is not a definitive guide, but more search engine marketing techniques can be learned by reading a sample SEO report at http://www.webefforts.co.uk/WebEfforts_Report.pdf.

1. This is good advice…getting in with Google is certainly an important task for anyone trying to do anything SEO related. I think you hit the main point good: write great unique content. Once you get that key down (making your unique content sing), then you'll really be on your way to ranking for those niche keywords you want to target. :)
2. nice article.. but what is the software to check duplicate content? or the best solution is cut and paste ( paragraph by paragraph) and google it ?
3. really worth information provided by yours some of the which you mentioned i thinking to try since long time now i got little confident .
keep writing informative things
4. all said a million times before - but good to remind people that SEO and Online Marketing doesn´t happen in auto pilot mode :-)
5. @ John,
For checking duplicate content, use the following free online resource:
www.CopyScape.com
6. This bit of advice looks like it falls outside Google's advice on paid links (ie you should tell us whether this is a paid for promotion) and the company E-consultancy is promoting is not utilising anything like best practice.
E-consultancy - you can do better than this.
7. Sorry G, don't follow - what are you referring to here? The link 'search engine marketing company'? Is that your problem?

8. I think G was referring to the irony of having a nice clean link on your blog to a commercial website, with their preferred anchor text and no nofollow. Ie you're giving them some good link juice and, if they've paid to be featured, then it could be argued that under google's paid link guidelines, that this is a paid link. Personally I found it amusing and chuckled when I saw it and when it comes to featuring partners on your blog and giving them some link benefit then, frankly, why not (as long as the article itself is informative and not written solely for the purpose of the link)!
:)
9. I am in the search engine rankings at number 7 for Website Design Lincolnshire. This is a good position, however, I want to be a lot higher, I understand that it takes a lot of hard work. Nevertheless, a few months ago, I was number 33, there is a vast improvement, but I know I will get to the top of the listings.

I am planning on creating a podcast and this will increase my rankings even further.
10. Ok, let me clear this up:

1) There are no paid links. We don't do paid links. You're working on assumptions that are 100% incorrect.

2) Max runs an SEO agency and is not affiliated with us, but I did invite him to contribute to the blog. Look at the 'Expert Bloggers' in the right sidebar to see others who do this. Max is not a 'partner' in any shape or form, and neither are any of the other experts. We will make this more clear in future.

3) The link was flagged up before publication and I chose to leave it in (knowing fine well that this sort of thing might happen). It seemed fair enough, and in context with the article. A bit cheeky, for sure, but a concise practical example. So I left it in.

4) As Will says, if the article is informative then isn't this ok? You seem to be taking exception because you are a competitor. Would you have complained if we'd linked to a travel website?

5) "The company E-consultancy is promoting is not utilising anything like best practice." Firstly we're not *promoting* anybody. Secondly you need to back up statements like that on best practice. We're well aware that lots of big and small agencies bend the rules all the time.

Appreciate you keeping us on our toes...

Chris
11. this is very good information... unique product content is one of the key strategies to rank better in search engines like google, but i have seen many retail website lack in delivering the unique contents (product descriptions). SEO has more to do with unique contents and on-page factors along with link building...
12. For checking out your site for duplicate content a good place to go is www.copyscape.com. This site can check to see how many sites may use the same content you are using.

Also the website of www.webconfs.com has a similar page checker for checking your own site for duplicate content.
13. i will agree with copyscape because they've got very good system to check our content for Unique purpose and content is the king in search engines.

if you've got uniques content for your visitors so you will win the Game of SEO.

Google says, if you've some thing good for your users so you will be good for google.

this info will help to many new webmasters, you did a very good job in this article.

Thanks
Paul
