Xmas etail stats round-up

Once again, online retailers have had a more successful Christmas than their high street counterparts, with early reports suggesting that internet sales continued to rise rapidly.

According to the British Retail Consortium, UK retailers suffered their worst December for three years.

Here's a round-up of Xmas-related sales figures in the UK and across the Atlantic...

The UK:

• 4.4m people spent a total of £84m online on Christmas Day - 269% more than last year and an average of £19.09 per shopper. [Source: IMRG]
  
  
• Despite its woes on the high street, online sales at Marks & Spencer rose by 78% in the 13 weeks up to December 29. [Source: M&S)
  
  
• The UK's online shoppers reportedly spent £767,500 in just 60 seconds at 1.09pm on December 10th. [Source: Retail Solutions]
  
  
• Figures for the whole of December are unavailable as yet, but online spending reached £5.4bn in November. This equates to £891 spent online for every person in the UK, and was an increase of 65% over November 2006. [Source: IMRG]

The US:

• $29.2bn (£14.9bn) was spent online during the US holiday season, which runs from November 1st to December 31st. [Source: comScore]
  
  
• This was an increase of 19% over the same period in 2006.  [Source: comScore]
  
  
  
• The busiest day Stateside was Monday, December 10, with online shoppers spending a total of $881m (£448.8m).  [Source: comScore]
