Microsoft to relaunch Live Search

Microsoft is set to unveil an updated version of its search engine at its 'Searchification' event for journalists next week. Today, it has rolled out an updated version of the homepage.

The new page has a cleaner, simpler look than the previous version and is similar to Google, with the tabs above the search box allowing the user to search for videos, images, news etc.

This is all that is new so far though - the results page reveals the old Live Search look:

July's search engine stats from comScore show that Microsoft has just 3.9% of the UK search market, compared with around 13% of the US market.

Earlier this year, Ask.com also revamped its search engine with new navigation and a range of results from different media types.

Alongside an aggressive new ad campaign, this is estimated to have attracted nearly a million new UK users for the site.

1. The Design of Life Search is very nice, but the Google SERPs are still the best.
2. I like more the attempt to differentiate the Live service from the Google one than the result obtained.

Yesterday I was reading an interesting article that was taking this new layout as an example to introduce a discussion about differentiation.
The discussion was about the necessity to "copy" the graphic of the main competitor rather than using a completely new one.
In other words: is it better to do something new, so to differentiate the service, or to make a very similar layout, in order not to scare the users and try to steal customers from the competitor?

Personally I prefer the second choice, because makes the market more dynamic.

At the same time, I think that this layout will not be definitive: I don't know what, but there is something that I don'tlike (maybe the colours, maybe it's too "horizontal"...)
