Social networkers 'enter false info'

Almost a third of social network users say they have entered false information about themselves in order to protect their privacy, according to a new survey.

The emedia report found almost two thirds of people that use sites like Facebook and MySpace say they have concerns about revealing personal details on the sites.

The survey found that:

  • 24% of social network users visit these sites on a daily basis, while almost half (48%) admit to using them at work.

  • 81% of those surveyed use networking sites, while the most popular were Friends Reunited (47%), YouTube (42%), MySpace (39%), Facebook (26%) and LinkedIn (19%).

Social networks have been criticised over privacy issues before and the recent move by Facebook to make user profiles searchable will concern many.

It is also under fire from some members over its "planned" targeted ad system.
