Measurement group Nielsen has boosted its ability to track consumers’ use of mobile services with the purchase of market research firm Telephia.

The deal, expected to close by the third quarter, follows closely after Nielsen’s launch of a unit focusing on people’s use of mobile content services and the sector’s impact on established media behaviour.

Nielsen said that the transaction was part of an ongoing strategy to expand its monitoring services across all media platforms.

Telephia provides over 100 clients in North America and Europe with its measurement services, including figures on subscriber market share, network quality, consumer satisfaction and mobile media consumption.

The move is the latest in a flurry of expansive moves by measurement firms recently, including Hitwise’s purchase by Experian and comScore’s decision to list on Nasdaq.
