Barclays uses chip and PIN to combat online fraud

2. PINsentry is crap, straight away Barclays has made on-line banking a pain in the arse.

I don't want this and as far as I see it I have no choice but to go along with their crazy plans. They're forcing people to use this stupid device and taking away all of the pleasure of online banking. Am I meant to keep one at work? one at home? one in my suitcase? one at my in-laws house, one at my parents house - or perhaps I'm meant to carry it around in my pocket every day!?

I'll be leaving Barclays as soon as I can find another bank who won't be adopting such a ridiculous idea. RUBBISH

6. Re- PINsentry Barclays

I’m one of the unfortunate 500.000 Barclays on-line users to receive a ‘PINsentry’ device. It’s easy to use and works fine. That’s until you stay on line for some time and you get logged off, you then have to put your debt card in the PINsentry, re-enter your 4-digit pass code again, then re-enter your 8-digit code on-line again. It gets you down after the third or forth time!

The other problem is if you use other computers elsewhere when you are travelling etc, you need to carry the PINsentry devise with you!!! Not a good option sorry.

I believe the devise was not properly ‘field’ tested for its practicality.

I’m now back on the original protocol! If you wish to go back to the original protocol then phone Barclays complaints line and play holly hell!!! You could also mention the foreign call centres too!!!

8. I am a Barclays Premier customer who has just had this device forced upon me. I explained to Barclays some time ago that I would not be entertaining such a complicated and inconveniencing device. I work remotely from home, work, laptop, and use the internet from lots of different computers. I already have a wallet, blackberry and phone, keys for car and home...so I think they expect me to stick the PinSentry device up my....

No disrespect to anyone intended but as a premier customer I expected them to really try to retain my custom when I explained if my internet banking was impossible to use, I would have to move. Nothing, I was told that I had no choice in the matter and that 'all banks will have these within a year'...Well unfortunately for Barclays that seems not to be the case although Natwest are trialling it.

I'd be interested to see that if the money saved in fraud (which is relatively low compared to card usage fraud) will pay for the increase in wages they'll be paying to all the operators dealing with customers who simply give up on internet banking and revert to phone banking.

Being a stubborn being I simply changed my debits and closed my account. My advice is hit them where it hurts the most, in their pockets and change bank. I wouldn't be surprised if they come to ask you back when the ditch this stupid scheme....Idiots.

10. Yep, I received one too and for me it's just unworkable. As such I'm scouting options for a new bank, which I'm sure will be a totally hassle-free exercise...

12. Well, I have just used my PINsentry and I happen to think that it is a great idea.

Take a look at the bigger picture.

How about an internet chip n pin card that you can use on any website!

Banking, ebay, paypal or just about any web site that requires you to log in needs at least a password and in some cases much more than that. The result for most people is forgotten passwords or a temptation to write passwords down, which, for obvious reasons, is not a good idea.

I am sure that a chip & PIN card could be developed that could allow you to log into any of your web sites securely with one of these devices.

OK, I can see a BIG downside at present.

If someone gets hold of your card and knows your PIN you would be taken to the cleaners.

But how long before one of these card readers is developed into a fingerprint reader. Problem solved (unless a criminal chops off one of your fingers!)


As for comment #9 why would you need to carry it around? Keep on at home & one at your place of work. You don't really check your balance or pay a supplier when you go for a night out do you?

I applaud Barclays for taking this step. And ease of use? My 5 year old could use the device but I won't be telling him my PIN!

14. What a complete waste of time. I use a small fob for accessing my corporate network, seems to be fine. This "calculator" completely negates any advantages of online banking and surely will mean it'll mean longer queues in branches as if you find yourself on holiday, a weekend away from home or anywhere else without this piece of crap, online banking won't be an option any more.

16. I've already bollocked Barlcays this morning. When I got the message at my login screen a few weeks back telling me this was coming it was only advertised as being needed in order to make and setup new payments to other, when I get the box and open it It tells me that I need it in order to long EVERY SINGLE TIME. On their FAQ there's a question "What if I don't have my pinsentry and I really need to access online banking". Tough s**t is pretty much their answer.... why on earth, if I wanted to use Online banking and didn;t have that plastic POS would I want to call the telephone banking.

I must have used telephone banking once in the last 6 years of being with barclays and that was a nightmare... "what is your telephone banking password"... "I've never had one"... "well I can't help you"... you get the picture.

As previously said by someone... it's a farce. The project manager and operations manager in Barclays responsible for this should be fired. Whatever market research and focus groups were call upon to decide on this pinsentry deserve the sack.

As someone mentioned earlier, quite rightly, SECUREID tokens have been about for donkeys years and are one of, if not THE, market leader in online security commonly user in Virtual Private Networking. I work for an Investment bank who rely on these to maintaing data security for banking information so if they're good enough for JP Morgan they're damns sure good enough for Barclays. I worked at Barclays for many a year in my time with EDS. Secure ID tokens, or somethign similar would have been a far better option, they're a little key fob that fits on your keys. Surely the cost and maintenance of buying and badging 500,000 of these would be less than having those naff calculators created which no doubt has a bespoke design and manafacturing cost which we'll all end up paying for.

Sorry Barclays, but this one will cost you dearly!. I might just find out from my old contact who in Barclays was responsilbe for this abhorrent inconvenience and post their email address to accept teh public complaints!

20. I have just logged a complaint on this number - 0845 600 2323. The chances are they will stop you needing the PinSentry to log in if enough people complain. I have been given one of these for Natwest also, so it seems it is the future...

I understand why we have them but its complete overkill to have to carry around something which only increases the chances of someone seeing you enter your pin number.

Anyone using the Egg money manager can now forget it too.

Rather than shift the security features onto the user why don't the banks spend a little more time and money on the back end systems, providing us with a seamless user experience. If this is the way forward then I will be looking for a bank which promises that they will not be using such devices.

Security is an obvious issue which needs to be tackled, but it should not be a user centric issue, other than pin sheilding of course. If these thigns are becoming the norm then someone needs to legalise mens handbags :-) since carrying one of these for each bank account will be annoying.

Imagine the number of people who leave their card in the reader on their office desk accidentally...

Nice try Barclays, but at least let us log in without needing this thing!

22. So much for security - will terrorists realise these could be a good cover up for and get them through airport xray devices easily!!!!

Will airport security ban these devices because of that possibility (oh let's hope so!)

This Barclays one weighs 60grams - if every bank etc comes out with the same stupid device will airlines allow for extra weight allowance because of the amount of space they will all take up in luggage??

26. Lucky are you who received a PINSentry. I have just tried to make an urgent payment to my daughter only to find that her bank details have been wiped from my account (I know not why) and that without the PINSentry there is nothing I can do. Did I see somewhere that it will take a month to arrive if I ask for one now?

28. I am leaving Barclays for the same reason. The whole point of internet banking is the flexibility. PINSentry removes that flexibility, and I've found that I hardly logon anymore. NatWest uses the same system. Lloyds have a keyfob which has a rotating passcode every 30-60 seconds I think - at least that is a bit more portable I suppose. Currently I believe that Nationwide, Halifax and HSBC dont have these awful systems so I think its between those three. Its been encouranging to see so many people who agree with my thoughts on this subject. I thought I was being a 'grumpy old man' but I can see I'm not alone in disliking it.

34. I contacted the Call centre after receiving this, as it coincided with Barclays issuing me a new card for some random reason. Don't get me wrong, I quite like Barclays, but this device is, to me, the epitome of corporate think tanks providing a solution that just isn't suitable for the purpose in question. Why o why o why should I have to take something the size of a calculator with me wherever I go? Then, I have to open my wallet, get my card out (making sure nobody is watching of course), slip it in the machine, identify myself with a pin, then copy an eight digit number onto the login screen? Jeez - I use online banking to make things easy - PinSentry is just a monumental pain in the arse.

On making similar comments to the Barclays representative who rang me the other day for a 'survey', my comments were completely washed under the rug, and was instead asked to focus my comments on anything about my actual accounts, not, it would seem, any Heath Robinson-esque method for accessing them online.

I've been with Barclays for nearly 20 years, but this may be my last one - it really bugs me that much.

Suddenly I get my old page to enter 5 nummer account number; and select 2 letters ofypassword.
I try several times to log in without the new system.

42. This Barclays Pinsentry is a utter and complete waste of time.
It locked me out beacuse it refused to accept my pin. I have been on the helpdesk. They do not have a clue. I will need to go to the ATM to unlock this damn thing or go the nack with my passport and drivers licence.

46. Electronic chip passcodes is a great idea, I use it with ING bank. The only thing is, Barclays is no ING. If you need to compromise a pretty workable but a bit complex thing or a procedure, give it to Barclays.
They're the most ineffective service akin some 'Pasta Kings' restaurant in ziltshire!

48. Why are you trying to complecate our life? Do you seriously want us to divert to some other Bank's credit cards or what? I don't think this facility or the card with chip and an extra thing to be carried with us is needed at all. It's a bull shit idea who so ever has suggested to the Barclays guys. DO Bank mean to say that I must carry that device every where I move? Sorry nobody in this world would like to do it. pls change and drop your ideas of introducing Chip and Pin cards.

50. This PINsentry, or should I say SHITentry really does defeat the whole purpose of online banking. The whole point I thought, of online banking was that I would be able to handle my finances electronically, it turns out that I can't, I guess online means on you because everytime I want to log into this system to check my account I have to have this childish calculator on me. Please tell me that all banks are not switching to this idea, or else I will become an instant target to robbers who will think I am walking around with tons of cash in my pocket, but then again I guess I will. "Barclays gone Barking mad" that should be their new slogan.
