The BBC has announced that it is partnering with IBM to develop a range of new technologies across its departments, starting with a video search system for its CBeebies and CBBC programming.
Under the deal, the BBC will introduce an IBM system called Marvel, which has the ability to analyse images and video and categorise the content based on appearance.
It is hoped that this new system will produce more relevant results than current searches, which rely on the tags attached to videos. It is hoped that this technology can bypass the problem of manually tagging the BBC's vast library of content.
According to the BBC's director of future media and technology Ashley Highfield:
"Combining the BBC's massive TV and radio archive with IBM's cutting-edge research into video and audio search technology should provide the means to unlock huge latent value in our long tail of content."
There have been a number of attempts recently at improving video search, by searching content within clips, using 'deep tagging'.
Meanwhile, Coull.tv launched a video search site last year, while Blinkx uses a similar method.
