Glossary Term "virtual memory"

virtual memory

Related Terms RAM
Description A system whereby the operating system can access more random access memory than is physically installed in the computer. This is done by using hard drive space to store the extra memory data. When this data is required by the computer, the operating system "swaps" the data from the hard drive into RAM. The downside of virtual memory is that it is significantly slower than RAM, and can cause fragmentation of your hard drive.
