Mozilla was originally derived from the Netscape source code, before they decided the Netscape source was too messy and started from scratch. Mozilla was also the name given to the reptillian mascot of Netscape's Navigator product. Mozilla was the code name for Navigator during its early development (probably a reference to the product it was based on, NCSA Mosaic).
