phishing |
|
| Description | A "social engineering" trick used to convince people online to give out their personal information, such as credit card info or bank account details. A typical phishing scam involves sending an email that appears to be from the victim's bank, saying there's a problem with their account and if they'd be SO kind as to visit this website and enter their bank account password on the site, the problem will be rectified. What happens is that the website is made to look like the customer's bank's website, SO they feel comfortable entering their password - where it is stolen by the scammers. Of course, you should never reply to such an email - banks typically communicate with customers by means other than email, and will never ask you to give out your password. The word is pronounced the same as "fishing", and means the same thing - except in this case, the scammers are fishing for victims. The ph is a common respelling used in hacker lingo. (Phreaking is another hacker/cracker term beginning with ph.) |
