Description The name given to the most common typewriter/keyboard layout. The QWERTY keyboard was invented by C. L. Sholes in 1872 as part of the first Type-Writer. The layout was influenced by the tendency of the first Type-Writer machine to JAM up - the keys were arranged SO that combinations likely to JAM the machine occurred infrequently. The name comes from the first 6 letters on the first letter row of the keyboard.
