Glossary Term "bad sector"

bad sector

Description A storage block on a hard disk that has become damaged and cannot be used without a high risk of data loss. Most modern hard disks have a lot of redundancy built in and recover internally from bad sectors. Even if bad sectors become visible to the operating system, it can work around it and store data in other locations - but bad sectors can be the first sign of a failing hard drive.
