partition

Related Terms MBR
Description A computer hard disk can be divided into a number of partitions, blocks of data that can be accessed independently. Partitions may appear as separate drives in your OS, even though they are part of the same hard drive. Each partition can use a different filesystem (such as FAT32, Ext2 or BFS), and each operating system must reside in a partition of its own. Partitions can be constructed using programs such as partition Magic, FDISK, Disk Druid and QTPartEd.
