Description file Allocation Table, the filesystem used by DOS and Windows. The original version, now called FAT16, allowed partitions up to 2GB in size - SO if you had a 6GB drive, you had to split it into 3 partitions. FAT32 was introduced in Windows 95 OSR2 and allows for much larger partitions.
