Job Description
Due to the growing needs of our online business, we are looking to recruit a Website Manager. This individual will lead a continuous program of enhancements to the johnlewis.com and associated web sites.The web site is John Lewis Direct’s key trading platform. It is our main store front; the primary contact we have with our customers. The quality of the design, usability and selling ability of the web site is a major factor in the success of our business.
The web site needs to sell an expanding diversity of products effectively and efficiently, communicate the John Lewis ethos and values, and promote the wider department stores. Managing these sometimes conflicting demands is a crucial part of the role.
Experience in managing an IT development team is required but more important is both commercial awareness and in-depth understanding of web site functional design for a mass market consumer business.
This is a senior role and we would expect the applicant to take a very active role in our cross functional trading / management team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned).
1. Management of a flexible program of development work, from large scale cross-departmental projects to smaller web changes and bug fixes.
2. Prioritisation, estimating and scheduling of both long and short term work. Together with dealing with issues, conflicts and managing expectations.
3. Management of a team of five developers (lead by a team leader) and two usability analysts.
4. Mentoring, coaching and development of each member of the team.
5. Liaison and expert communication with business departments to ensure that development plans meet the wider business goals
6. Proactively researching and pushing forward own and team’s ideas for development of the web site and the wider business.
7. Liaison with database, commerce engine and QA teams to ensure that front end developments integrate seamlessly.
8. Liaison with graphic designers to ensure visual appeal and brand integrity of the site.
9. Sponsorship of a program of usability testing. This individual should be user-centred in their approach. They must consider the website functionality from the viewpoint of current and potential John Lewis customers.
Candidate Requirements
• Educated to degree level.
• Demonstrable experience in the design and development of a medium or large scale transactional ecommerce website.
• Business focused and commercial with an understanding of the online retail marketplace.
• An in-depth understanding of key usability and accessibility standards and research techniques such as usability testing and card sorting.
• An in-depth understanding of web technologies (HTML, etc).
• At least three years of management experience.
• Experience in managing cross-functional business projects.
• Self-confidence, assertiveness and personal motivation.
