Background: Simon Waldman joined the Guardian in 1996 to work on the Guardian’s new media venture, Eurosoccer.com. He became editor of Guardian Unlimited prior to launch in 1998 and was promoted to head of Guardian Unlimited in December 1999.

Waldman studied classics at the University of Bristol and began his career as a trade journalist, working for Shoe and Leather News (1988 – 1989), Draper’s Record (1989-1990) and Media Week, where he became deputy editor (1990 – 1993). His interest in the internet in 1993 prompted him to become a freelance journalist writing extensively about the new media industry.
