What was the idea behind this event?

"An Internet Decade" was an event to recognise the contribution of around 100 individuals for their input and influence on the development and growth of e-commerce and the internet in the UK over the last 10yrs.

It was specifically for individuals rather than companies and it was deliberately UK-focused. It was also designed to recognise not just those people with high public profiles, but also those who have contributed so much 'behind the scenes'.

What's the significance of the 10yrs?

There is no particular date or historical landmark from 10yrs ago, rather it is a retrospective (unusual to be looking back for such a young industry…) spanning the last decade.

It does, however, also happen to be the 10th anniversary of the World Wide Web consortium, founded by Sim Tim Berners-Lee. It is also 10yrs since NOP World started their Internet User Profile Survey which has since charted the trends of internet usage in the UK.

How were the individuals chosen?

We asked 100 industry opinion formers who they would nominate and we also asked for nominations from our 25,000+ registered site users. We had just over 600 nominated individuals in total which we then reduced to the final list of 130 with 100 attending the actual event.

We did not provide a shortlist for people to vote on, nor are the 130 on the final list ranked in any way. Indeed, as many of those nominated have pointed out themselves, there are no doubt many very deserving individuals not included, so the final list is really only some of those who have done so much.

What happened at the reception evening on 7th October 2004?

There were addresses from the following:

  • Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for the DTI (video address)
  • Derek Wyatt, MP, Chair of the All Party Internet Group
  • Brent Hoberman, CEO, lastminute.com
  • David Docherty, Chairman, YooMedia
  • Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Founder, W3C (video address)

Where can I find out more about those on the final nominee list?
