Accenture
Relaunch of Andersen Consulting as Accenture is backed by a £117million worldwide advertising spend. Experts estimate the former brand name is worth £2.5bn-£3bn. The jury is still out as far as arch rivals Arthur Andersen adopting the name and its brand capital for their own consultancy business is concerned.

Accenture has confirmed the creation of circa 400 new partners in 2001, as a result of the restructuring of the firm following its split from Arthur Andersen.

Accenture are to offer UK graduate recruits a £10,000 golden hello in order to mitigate increasing competition from banks, professional services & high-technology companies for top graduate recruits. 2001 recruits will receive £6,000 on arrival and £4,000 after one year's service

PA CONSULTING and ARTHUR D LITTLE have apparently put an end to proposed merger talks, having almost concluded an agreement late in 2000. The deal is said to have foundered on PA's concerns about ADL's financial prospects

BCG
Venture with Goldman Sachs to invest in online businesses. Together with General Atlantic Partners, the venture - called iFormation Group - will invest in online businesses of established, offline companies

Booz Allen & Hamilton
Announced (Nov 2000) the creation of Aestix, a new stand-alone e-delivery company providing digital technology integration and Web implementation services. The company employs 150 employees in the US and UK

Cambridge Technology Partners
CAMBRIDGE TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS has announced it is to lay off circa 280 employees (7 % of its work force) owing to slowing demand for its Web consulting services. It is not clear how many of the redundancies will affect European operations. The company also announced it expects Q4 2000 revenues of $127-129m, as against analyst expectations of $147m. In addition to the slowdown in web consulting activity, the firm also cited problems at its CAMBRIDGE MANAGEMENT CONSULTING business, caused by "delays in several large projects", though declining to name the clients in question

CG E&Y
Could enjoy tax savings close to £1bn over 15 years following its acquisition of the consultancy arm of Ernst & Young. The group will benefit from deductibility of goodwill amortisation recorded in the US. It is thought that other companies involved in the acquisitions of consulting businesses of accounting firms could also gain tax benefits

Deloitte Consulting
DELOITTE TOUCHE's 2000 results surprised many in the consultancy world, with accountancy revenues outgrowing those of its consultancy practice. (15%pa and 11%pa respectively). The results raised eyebrows as the Big 5 have grown accustomed to seeing consultancy fee growth at double the rates of audit fee growth

Global Services division now World's biggest consultancy

Announced early November a 10% reduction in employee numbers aimed at saving the firm circa £60m. The announcement follows poor Q3 2000 results and a subsequent 60% drop in the firm’s share price. Most of the redundancies will hit consultants based in the US

LONDON, 31 July 2000 – A recent survey by Mercer Management Consulting of 140 sales executives shows that while Internet support can have a very positive impact on many direct sales operations, its overall effect on indirect channel sales appears to be reduced productivity.

MCKINSEY caused a stir in January 2001 with the acquisition of US brand consultancy Envision. The acquisition is a "mass hiring" to accelerate the expansion of its branding practice, formed three years ago. Commentators saw the move as treading on the toes of the advertising agency giants, who have increasingly seen consultancies encroach on their brand strategy territory. It also follows hot on the heels of WPP's acquisition of e-services consultancy Imaginet earlier in January. The move was out of character for McKinsey, which tends to grow organically rather than through acquisition

An interview with the head of McKinsey suggests it has successfully made the transition to the e-business era. 40% of its work is now internet-based, said the MD. The firm is thought to have completed 1,000 e-commerce assignments worldwide in 2000, around three times the level in 1999

PA Consulting
Acquires US Consultancy Hagler Bailly for $96m, considerably bolstering its position in the US.

PWC
PwC announced a 15% rise in annual revenues for 2000 - with the management consulting business achieving a 14% revenue increase. The figures are seen as in-line with the Big5, but the news was nonetheless accompanied by the announcement that 100 of the 1,100 UK partners face the axe.

Hewlett Packard have announced the collapse of talks to buy the consulting arm of PwC. HP announced disappointing annual results that sent shares falling 15% - the firm had already been seeking a reduction in the asking price for the PwC business

Razorfish
Razorfish, employer of 300 staff in London, is to cut around 30 staff in the UK as part of a ‘performance improvement plan’ that will see it reduce staff numbers by 10% across the group. The measure is seen as a response to lower than expected 3rd quarter figures for the company, which were blamed in particular on unsatisfactory European results

WCI
On 1 January 2001, a ‘one-stop shop’ for B2B e-transformation was created through the merger of World Class International, 2GL and Counterpoint; the new entity will combine international business consulting with technology to deliver positive change solutions

Zefer
US internet consultancy Zefer has secured more than $20 million in additional financing from GTCR, its primary investor, at a time when financing and investor optimism in the Internet consulting industry have become increasingly scarce. Zefer said it plans to use the investment to fund its continued expansion in the United States and overseas. The company has just opened a London office, its first presence in Europe.
