95% of information architects are fakes

Why can't we all take a broader view of the words "information" and "architecture"? Is there really a crying need to change the job title after well over a decade of use? It's like the crazy State of Ohio, which has absurdly protected the designation "architect" thus forcing "landscape architects" to call themselves something silly. How sad that building architects feel so insecure...

A related anecdote: my father was a physician and professor of medicine at a major U.S. university. The guy who fixed his car called himself "Doctor Dan - we fix 'em dead or alive." My father wasn't at all threatened by this. Thank goodness.

In the world of built architecture, you'll find Norman Fosters and Frank Gehrys. But you'll also find the John Anons who do the grunt work. Not everyone is a rock start. Nor do they have to be. In information architecture, we have the strategists, who paint in broad business strokes, and the tacticians, who do the taxonomies, metadata, and thesauri that make the strategy work. And the profession needs them both. So does the business community -- the job title is really very unimportant when it comes to creating value and ROI.
