Big Name SEO Agency or In House Team

Big name agencies do cost.  There are smaller agencies which cost a fraction of big name agencies but produce the same results. I don't think it has been mentioned yet but there are significant ongoing costs involved with recruiting an in house team. Skilled SEOers will cost in terms of wages, benefits plus the additional costs of recruitment. I've worked both client side and for an agency. In my opinion for larger corporates an in-house team is affordable, but for SMEs, agencies can deliver great results at a lower overall costs.

Techniques of Big Name Agencies:
So I hand over £10K+ a month budget to a big name agency (OK so I know that's not going to get me that far but its a start). Exactly what are they going to do with the time we pay for?

Have they got anything up their sleeves that I couldn't do with a decent PR person, web developer & full time link builder, and a decent sponsorship/link bribe budget?

I know its a broad question, but if anyone can shed some light it would be much appreciated.
