Joe,
I have used a system called Concep Campaigner which I was very happy with and which would meet your needs. Very flexible and very robust and some nice little add-ons for events and christmas cards. Call Richard Hartshorne there on 0207 952 5598 or have a look at their site www.concepglobal.com .

Hi Joe
Your requirements sound very similar to those of a number of our existing clients. If you pass me your contact details on Paul.Crabtree@adestra.com , I'll give you a shout and give you an overview.
You can find out a little more about Adestra at www.adestra.co.uk . we provide email solutions for a considerable number of UK companies including BBC Worldwide, London Syphony Orchestra, RM and Oxford University Press amongst many more.
I look forward to hearing from you
Paul

Hi Joe,
We have a couple of options for you. I am happy to email you a quote and some more details. Just drop me a line at sean.duffy@emailcenteruk.com and I will pop it over by return to you.
Our solution is used by over 400 UK organisations so it is fairly well established.
Regards
Sean Duffy

Further to the related thread about "how long to send 42,000 emails"..
I'm looking for a mailing solution that will, cost effectively, allow us to send
1) all our customer ordering correspondence (we are getting a large amount of undelivered mail - and when this is order confirmations it creates havoc)
2) marketing email (opt-ins) - probably 500,000-1m a month in HTML.
Currently we're using the solutions built onto our web front ends for the order confirmations, and Vertical Response for the marketing. VR is proving expensive at over £1,000 per mailshot to our customer base of 250k.
we'll need to be able to prepare the communications away from this tool, and then pass them to the tool to do the sending. the priority is that the emails arrive, and that we're not paying through the nose.
Any ideas, solutions?
