Hi Ashley,
Thank you very much for the feedback, it is nice to hear from the e-consultancy man himself :-)
The main reason for my asking the question is that we are receiving a lot of queries/complaints from local businesses who are being targeted by those directories ( I understand the localised versions are franchises).
I do have strong views about those directories but I was keen to provide a balanced opinion so thanks for the help.

At the very best they might help you get your site spidered but that's only valuable if your site hasn't already been spidered, which I'm sure it has. Also you could still do a better and cheaper job of that using Online PR rather than buying directory links.
Invest the money you save in creating more good content for your own site!
