avatar It never ceases to amaze me the number of clients who fail to ask there web designers and developers about their knowledge of the search engines.

Granted it's not the job of a developer / designer to worry about promoting the site to the search engines but they must have a good understanding of how the search engines work in relation to search engine friendly website design. Tthe way that a site is structured can make a huge difference when it comes to good search rankings.

My advice to any company looking to take on a new web design / development project is to ensure that your any prospective design company understands search engine friendly design and provide them with a detailed brief as to what your search engine marketing strategy will be together with the actual keywords that you want them to incorporate into the site architecture and with in particular pages.

An early meeting to discuss search marketing strategy with your design team is an essential part of the devolopment cycle of a site now, particuarly if you want your site to be successful in terms of good search engine rankings.

    ashley-friedlein-favourite.jpg Hi Andrew

You often hear this same complaint from other specialists. What it boils down to is that pretty much everyone wants to be in the room right at the beginning of any project and make sure their input is included as early as possible.

How one actually manages this, and what process to use, is the tricky thing.

Don't know if you saw my post on this a while back - From Paper to Page – what’s the ideal web design process?

    avatar Hi  Ashley,

Having read your web project management book earlier this year i've been recommending that all my clients follow a similiar strategy.  If only all design agencies would invest in the book we may be starting to get somewhere lol. Ofcourse if they did i reckon you might have retired and be sitting by the pool by now!

Thanks for the updated post link anyway.

    Best Regards,

The problem with web designers is they're a dime a dozen, and they think they can do everything. Print designers doing web work are the worst, becuase they are usually ignorant of the complexities of the internet, in fact I remember reading a study around 5 years ago about designers being the #1 point of failure of internet projects.

There definitely seems to be a trend for the better designers with decent web experience to partner with SEM's so that they can concentrate on their core strengths.
