Google ain’t that clever (or is there a hidden agenda?)

>I don't have the time to get into search engine optimisation, I'm afraid.

Well I think your options are:

1) do nothing and hope it will all get better on its own
2) learn how to optimise and increase your chances
3) pay someone to do job professionally

>I feel that I shouldn't have to, that Google should be
>clever enough to identify my site as a good one and rate
>it better - why should a site with 400+ pages about a
>specific topic be rated less that a generic one with
>only 3 for the same?

Well I am not Google, but I'd say that they don't owe living
to no one. Its entirely possible that your webdesign was done in
such a way that it gives Google no chance to index you (say excessive
javascript usage).

>Now that Google has gone public and priorities are
>shifted to generating revenue, how unrealistic is the
>idea that Google may favour sites that are less
>likely to be Ad Words clients so those that are find
>themselves at the bottom of the list?

They will certainly not going to bend over backwards to make
your site higher in rankings - 3 main options are:

1) pay for AdWords (might not be cost effective)
2) optimise your site (long term best choice)
3) do nothing
