Nah, as far as client (browser) is concerned it has got a URL (with slash or not), this URL is requested from server, and its up to server to decide correctly what should be send back - a file or directory listing or denying access - asking for username/password however would involve 2nd request, however this would always happen for both variants (with and without slash).
A bit tired right now to capture actual exchange of messages to prove that, but if necessary I can do that...
