I think that portals are living on borrowed time from back the days when people came online and obtained email address that they don't want to change - this certainly helps Yahoo and MSN (via HoTMaiL). These two are now going into searching because they (I think) understand that search engine on servers became something similar to what browser is on desktops.

In my view number of people going direct to sites of interest is on increase thanks to search engines, and advertising migrated from banners on portals to targeted words on search engines. In fact many portals that I come across with seem to survive on being meta-search engines or something very closely related to those, because this is where the money are.

How useful portals? Well, Yahoo and MSN have got some features, so I think they can be okay, however a lot of new entrants in my view offer nothing apart from ability to spam search engines with pages that are listing of their advertisers.

I think portals that have managed to establish themselves thanks to the strength of their products do have a future. Yahoo is a good example. I think they have done a great job to ...

I also agree that the market will be broken-up in more or less the same way as in your last assessment. What I would like to propose, however, is that to get a clearer picture o ...
