Well I disagree with a passion - people seem to take email for granted without thinking of reasons why it became so successful, an incomplete list of reasons is as follows:

1) its free - there is a whole class of people who would not use email as near as much if it cost even 1 penny per email, in fact they would not stop using "email" that suddenly will start costing them money, but they will just switch to new free system called "email2" or "ICQ" or "MSN" or whatever its going to be called. Spam will follow.

2) its a cast in stone standard - when you send email to an email address you know it will be read there (that even applies to HTML mail these days)

3) its almost instant - people sometimes even call person they emailed a few minutes after they did it to check if they received it!

I am sure Royal Mail would love to see non-free email but in all honest I just can't see the whole world to voluntarily agree to compromise all the benefits that emails brings to us just because of spam. A lot of work is being done in this area that will minimize effect of spam without compromising benefits of emails that we all enjoy without thinking about it.

regards,

Alex
